Flip Ultra Advice?

(swimming) flip turn advice!!!?

  • my flip turn in swimming really suck... Any advice on how to inprove my flip turn

  • Answer:

i am a swimmer and i can understand what you mean. when i first started swimming a long time ago i had trouble with my flip turns. i learned some great tips that can help though. First don't stop kicking until your actually doing your flip. if you stop you loose precious time in the race and you loose momentum. then when your flipping you should do a tight fast somersault motion. you should plant your feet on the wall to get a better push off and always i mean always have a tight streamline it will help your speed and technique with the turn. Going off the wall you should always do three kicks well in a tight streamline that will help you get farther off the wall. that's pretty much it when it comes to flip turns. hopefully this helps you with your flip turns

It is normal to hesitate sometimes on a flip turn, especially if you are not confident in your turn. It really hurts when you throw your heels up on the deck! When you have perfected your turn, you should push hard into the wall preparing for the turn, but at first you need to get your stroke/distance/timing down. Start swimming into the wall and just practice flipping your hips and legs over and make contact with the wall. Just go that far until you are comfortable with how many strokes you need to hit the wall just right. Then work on "popping" off the wall with your push off. You need to bounce off the wall like a ball hitting the pavement. After that, make sure you are stretching out long and tight underwater as you push off. Hold your streamline as long as it takes you to rotate on to your stomach, then start the dolphin kicks to bring you to the surface. When you are about to surface, start the flutter kick and take your first stroke with the arm opposite the side you usually breathe on. It may take some time and practice, but a great turn will save those precious fractions that can put you ahead of your competition in the end.

Paul M gave really good advice, except that you should not breathe on your first stroke, it will slow you down A LOT! You don't realize it, but each time you breathe you waste a lot of time, especially that first breath. Take two strokes and THEN breath. Just doing that has helped me cut a bunch of time off of all my distance times especially the 500 yd free.
