Answer:
Best bet is to get an aerial specialist in to sort it out. They will put the new aerial in, set up your tv and dvd and freeview and, if needed, put a signal booster in. Its just a little box the goes between the aerial socket and the tv. But get someone in to work out your problem. Just flick through the yellow pages. Basic rule of thumb though is look at your aerial, if it has one back plate perpendicular to the 'ladder' part then it will need replacing. If it has 2 plates at a smaller angle to the 'ladder' then it should be ok. We got ours done for £200, all setup, all shown to be working including a signal booster. We also got a free freeview box thrown in.

It seems you need a digital aerial because your standard one is not capable of receiving the signal.but if you get new aerial I would also upgrade the cable too standard TV runs a 50ohm and digital runs 70ohm might just give a better attenuation.

Are you in area that has a strong signal ? is your new box/dvd faulty ?. can you check with neighbours to see if they can reseive free view with out a new arial ? I bought free view built in to an LCD tv and my old arial, in the under drawing of the roof, works fine

You may well need a better aerial. With analogue TV as the signal weakens the picture gradually gets snowier until no longer watchable. With digital there is a sudden point at which the signal is too weak to be usable. This is called the edge of the cliff effect. Even with a good outdoor aerial you may not get all Freeview channels because until the analogue is switched off, some freeview channel groups are being transmitted out- of -band and need a wideband aerial to receive them. Also digital is not on full power yet until analogue is switched off. Here is a link to help you. http://www.ukfree.tv/starthere.php Hope this helps.

you may need a wideband ariel or maybe a signal booster box. Both you can buy from Argos.

You need a wideband high gain aerial - about £20 from Argos - if push comes to shove you can fit it in your loft and suffer no signal degradation. I didn't

I didn't think DVD players came with freeview,I understood it was either in the T.V. or a sperate box ?You don't need a special aerial.

To obtain freeview you need a set top box. These can be purchased at Argos and many high street stores approx 30.00 to buy. However do check it will work in your area. I think there is a search on the net I wouldnt take the shop assistants word for it.
