LCD or a plasma screen?

Do LCD TVs have a better picture than Plasma Screen TVs?

  • Ok, I've always been an LCD TV guy myself, but my friend swears by his plasma screen and keeps telling me to "upgrade" and get rid of my LCD. Is there really very much ...show more

  • Answer:

Instead of reading each persons personal comments, I recommend you go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs, along with the pro and con of each technology. You will notice that Plasma is still considered to have the best picture quality of all tv in the market. The only Plasma tv they recommend from all manufacturer is the Panasonic. Panasonic also has more Plasma tv being recommended than any type of tv from other manufacture. For 2010 Home Theater Magazine named the Panasonic Plasma tv model VT25 as the best tv, while 2009 belong to Pioneer Elite also a Plasma. If you read yahoo questions, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tv. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for.

This is a complicated question because of the different technologies used. There are tons of really good articles online if you want to read all the technical differences, but here's a summary. You will find 3 main types of TVs out in the market: Plasma vs. LCD vs. LED Plasmas have true black color, widest viewing angle and the most brilliant colors. So plasmas are good for viewing movies in a room with low light at night. But they get really hot, use a lot of electricy, and can burn out really fast within a few years, so you have to replace them sooner. Because of its energy and cost non-effeciency, plasmas are not a good investment. Traditional cathode LCDs, have a constant backlight, meaning even black colors will be lit up, so LCDs are better in bright rooms in the day. They are best if you have a game console connected and playing games on it. LEDs are the newest type of TVs. They are actually a type of LCD using similiar technology but a different type of backlight, so you get the same picture quality of a plasma without the burn in and using less electricity too. LEDs are a type of LCD screen, so it may even say LED LCD on the box, so when buying TVs, if you want an LED, be sure it says LED and not just LCD. You will know because they are so much more expensive than the traditional LCD or plasma. If you can afford it, LED LCD, not traditional LCD, give the best quality.

Plasmas do have a superior picture, but its not a huge difference. The main difference is that LCDs, with their huge backlights, don't do black very well, and some low-end or old LCDs have issues with fast-moving images having a motion-blur effect. On the downside for plasma is they use more electricity, many generate a lot of heat, and their glass fronts cannot have any sort of glare-reduction on trhem (making them bad for rooms where you cannot control the light levels well).

For most stuff there isn't a big difference. However: LCDs are lighter/thinner, more energy-efficient and look better when connected to video game systems and computers. Plasmas have better color saturation (especially deeper black levels) and are better for watching sports and fast action scenes in movies- they don't have the motion blur/ghosting issues that LCD's do. That's the biggest advantage of plasma and it's because of the way the underlying technology works. Watch a basketball or hockey game on a Plasma & LCD side-by-side and you'll notice the difference. It really shows with cheaper 60hz LCDs, the newer 120Hz and 240Hz models have narrowed the gap. Plasmas also look better when viewed off-angle. With LCDs the viewing angles are more restricted, although newer LCD sets have improved their performance in that area. Plasmas are also supposedly better for viewing 3D content but that's very new- I'm not sure how big the difference will be a year from now, because the technology is evolving so quickly. However, Plasmas are typically only available in larger sizes. And with plasmas the TV brightness does drop over time. A 5-year old plasma doesn't look as good as a new one. http://www.cnet.com.au/plasma-vs-lcd-which-is-right-for-you-240036500.htm http://www.ehow.com/info_7816139_120hz-vs-240hz-hdtv.html http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/plasma-vs-lcd-1.html http://www.best-3dtvs.com/guides/plasma-vs-lcd-3d-tv/

As long as you are talking about the higher-end LCD televisions - they are now approaching Plasma image quality as long as you are talking about the LED back-light and 120 hz or above units. And more and more of the 3D televisions are LCD so from that standpoint they are 'better' than plasma. I love plasma's because of the image quality but the down-side of plasmas are: * Highly reflective screens will reflect every light or window in the room like a mirror. * HEAT - Plasmas heat up a lot and use a lot more energy than a LCD. * Size - Plasma screens are glass and will break under their own weight if the sizes get much larger than about 50". To my mind - the BIG problem with LCD is - SIDE ANGLE VIEWING I have a large family and not everybody can sit in front. I would have to be very careful to buy a LCD television with a wide viewing angle. So look at your room and the placement of chairs to decide if a Plasma would be horrible for you (because of side windows or lights) or if it would work well. Hope this helps.

LCD TVs have a better picture than a plasma. Only an idiot would exchange a lcd for a plasma tv. Plasma tvs have serious problems. The colors are not as vivid, images will burn into your screen if left up un moving. Plasma tvs were introduced before LCD. So it would actually be a down grade.
