Answer:
First it's called a USB drive, flash drive or thumb drive. USB is the technological term for such connections. Normally, files in a USB drive don't get deleted automagically. So what would happen indeed? It all depends on your level of computer competency which at the moment doesn't look so good. I suggest you burn another copy or the pictures to a CD or DVD to be doubly sure.

So long as you use the "Safely remove devices" command before removing the USB drive, the photos should be fine. Damage to USB drives mainly happens when it is removed from the computer while it is being accessed, or if power is lost during that time. It is a much better idea to keep the photos on your hard drive if possible, as there is less chance of a hard drive going bad. Recordable optical discs are even more durable.

The USB is only a cord from camera to computer as I know you are aware of. But I just want to clear the air to I can explain the simplest way and BEST procedure to up load and SAVE your picture files. THE best and most useful procedure: 1. Buy a memory card reader, here in the USA that cost about $6.00 2. Insert your memory card from the camera into the memory card reader. 3. Insert the memory card reader into your computer (PC). 4. An "icon" will appear on your desktop, click to open it's contents. 5. There will probably be two folders (I don't know exactly as I own an Apple computer) 6. Click open the folders until you find your picture files. 7. Drag and drop your picture files onto the computer's hard drive where you store your pictures. 8. You should also own/have an additional hard drive to transfer your pictures to. That way if your computer hard drive fails, you have the pictures in two places. I personally use two hard drives so I have "3" places of storage! 9. At this time, delete only the files which are bad shots, or you do not want to save. You can click on the files and fill your computer screen to check details if you wish to give you a better idea of what you may or may not want to save. 10. After all picture files are saved then remove memory card reader and place memory card in camera and REFORMAT the memory card to clean and ready the memory card to take more pictures. Now completely unrelated to this question: You should NOT use the "delete button" on the camera because it leaves fragments of the deleted picture which interfere with the print made over the deleted photo's place. This will not show in 4x6's but will show when you make enlargements. Good Luck
It really depends on the photo management program. If you download photos from your camera to your PC using a downloading program, they will remain on the camera... unless the downloading program is setup to move the files rather than copy them. As well, some downloaders have a sync function so if you delete the file on your PC, then it could delete the file in the camera the next time you connected. While the default action of the downloader is most likely a copy function - it cannot be assured without looking at the setup. This uncertainty of downloading program behavior is one more reason why most experienced photographers do not download via USB - they simply remove the mem card from the camera and insert into the PC to transfer files.

I think you are missing something here. If you are using your PC to look at the photos on the Memory card, and delete the ones you don't want... then they are gone! unless you plug it back in and look in your wastebasket and "recover" the photo.
If you copy photos from a PC to a USB flash drive, then delete the photos in your PC, your photos will remain completely safe on the flash drive. Hope I helped.
