I think the Nikon D90 is the best "pro-sumer' camera and recommend it to anyone who is serious about getting into DSLR photography. It is wonderful for a beginner and moved up into expert photography perfectly. Check out http://www.dpreview.com/ . It is a wonderful website with a wealth of information.

I have a Nikon d5000. I love it! You can check it out on Nikon's website :) There's also the less expensive d3000 or the slightly more expensive d3100. Or, if your really into photography(and have some extra $), the d7000 There all great cameras! I'm also sort - of new to photography, the d5000 has been serving me well :)

I just purchased a Pentax Kx and a 28-to-200mm Tamron lens. I like the clean viewfinder and the fact that the camera will take all older Pentax lenses, which is good should I happen on a good deal a lens that use to fit a film model of the Pentax. The camera ran about $500.00. Don't forget a decent tripod for those old building shots!
i have liked Nikon. spend $300 or more.
