What does a marketing director do?

How does a marketing director decide where and on what to spend money?

  • When you're about to decide where your firm's dollars go: What gets you excited? What makes you happy? What statistics, metrics, evaluators, feedback mechanisms, etc do you use to determine the viability and/or success of your expenditures? What ability would you most desire in a campaign?

  • Answer:

What has worked into the past is a great starting point, but clearly not enough. Trial and errors with short term approaches like PPC and social media contests are great. You can then parlay the attention towards content that's been created (in-house or outsoruced). At Apptegic, we just invested in a new website so conversion and SEO are two big indications of success we'll be watching. SEO ranking make me very happy but the best metrics are the big ones like revenue, customers aquisition costs and churn rates because the all imply what's working and what's not.

For me, only one key performance indicator stands out from the rest: the Net Promotor Score (see Wikipedia). At our company, we measure it on a weekly basis and it gives us lots of value. I know that some academics don't like asking only one question, but nowadays people don't have time to answer more.
