What is a car overheating temperature?

My Engine Coolant light went on today and my car stalled but the temperature gage wasn't showing overheating?

  • I drive a 1994 pontiac grand. It was at a normal temperature the whole time (about 20 minutes of driving and 10 minutes turned on in the driveway). I've had it for 10 years and ...show more

I have a '97 GM, 2.4L with the same problem. Low coolant light, normal temp gauge. It may pay you to check out this month's issue (Feb., 2010) of Popular Mechanics. There is an article on replacing radiators which, at the end, explains how some vehicles need the front end jacked up to purge any remaining air in the system. Could be that your sensor for the gauge is in the coolant, but your idiot light sensor is above the coolant level. This way they would both be right, and explain your problem.

The coolant warning light may also be used to report over types of engine problems. If the coolant checks out, best bet is to take it into a garage and get a once over.

You might have a faulty temperature guage sensor or you may have a leak in your system. Please check under the car for coolant leaks. You may have a hole in your hoses.

Just because the coolant light comes on doesn't mean your gonna overheat, that light is telling you to top it off, your getting low. There can be a number of reasons why its low, leaks, evaporation, bad gaskets, heater lines/core. bring it to your local shop have it checked (the fluid- the most neglected part of any vehicle) and have them pressure test the system, you dint want to be on the highway when that head gives out or that heater core pops...Just a piece of mind

gauge itself may be messed up. but sensor may be working properly as for the light coming on. or maybe its just that the coolant is low and as you slow it over heats to some degree. my guess would be check coolant level. good luck

i hat to say this but in order for your temp gage to work it must have fluid to seance the temp of the Fuel if its low and cant seance the temp might as well put your tinge on it to test the temp

First check your coolant level, make sure engine is cold to the touch if you remove the radiator cap. If coolant is low add to the proper level. It is possible to have a defective temperature gauge or sending unit.
