How much do a set of golf clubs weigh?

Why are there so many cost variations in golf clubs sets? Is a $1000 set really any better than a $200 set?

  • I am thinking of purchasing my wife a set of golf clubs for her birthday. I see so many variations of golf clubs sets in terms of pricing. She is not looking to become a golf pro but ...show more

good advice to look at here. you get what you pay for is true in alot of areas. i just dont think golf is one of them. i play with a set of clubs total cost me 300 dollars. the set before them cost me 600. i play better with the 300 and they came from walmart. alot of companys now see they can way over charge for there clubs. mainly calloway and taylor made. nike too. i play with a brand called dunlop. they have the best feeling clubs i have ever seen and hit just as good if not better than the rest. but you have to find the clubs that fit good in to your hands and swing. so my opinion which is all what yahoo answers is . no a $1000.00 set is not any better than a $200.00 set. its all in the golfer.

Well, after many years of playing golf, I have discovered you cannot BUY a good golf game. I have had the $1000 dollar sets and spent a lot of money selling buying and trading trying to find a better game. My conclusion is; Pick the brand you really want, and get the "knock-offs" at about 1/3rd the cost. Now the putter is a different story.......You buy the putter you are good at play with. $12 putters are just as good as a $300 putter if you are confortable with it. Putters are very personal. Good luck to you and yours.....FORE!

Golf clubs range in price because of the different kinds of shafts. graphite, steel, the name brand, they have oversized irons. If your wife is a beginner i would go the cheaper route. You can get some Mcgregors or Wilsons fairly cheap 300 or less.

I have Callaway Fusion irons. They are way better than my old cheap 200 dollar ones. Would recommend to anyone.

with rare exception....the answer is no. Ego is what drives most of us to the more expensive clubs under the misconception that "Tiger Plays this club and look what he does"....I should be unbeatable too. Have fun teaching her how to play.

It doesn't matter whether you spend $1000 or $200 on a set of golf clubs, if you can't play, it doesn't matter what brand, shaft, etc that you buy or play. I have seen guys that have the most expensive Nike Brand Clubs or Callaway Clubs, most expensive Callaway or Nike Balls, Nike Bag, Nike Shoes, and they still aren't worth two cents. It is one of those situations where you have "$1000 clubs with a 10 cent golf swing." If your wife is just a leasure golfer, I wouldn't spend a whole lot of money on a set of clubs for her. Just my opinion though!

No. A lot of it has to do with marketing. Look at Nike, they pay Tiger millions and someone has to cover the cost of that advertising. Best thing to do is to let you wife pick out a set that she likes. While it is the shaft that is the most important part of the club the look of the club to the golfer is critical to the confidence of the golfer.

In all the postings where a lady is going to buy her guy some clubs the consensus is to buy a gift certificate and let him pick out the clubs. I think that applies to guys buying girls clubs too! She should go get the best quality fitting she can for her swing and playing style. Then she should go demo multiple brands and pick out the set that appeals to her and meets her fitting requirements. Get her a gift certificate for that! (Use her getting new clubs as an excuse to demo some for yourself and if you have never been fitted either, get that done too)

Unless she's been playing for a while she probably wouldn't notice much difference between the $200 set and the $1000 set. The more expensive ones are probably going to be nicer - lighter, better grips/balance, etc., but unless she is going out on a the LPGA tour, she can probably get by with a set in the $200-$300 range. If she finds that needs something better later, then she can upgrade - starting with the clubs she uses most often. Like with most sports/games equipment - you generally get better equipment for the money - but nothing can replace raw talent. I've seen guys using a set of clubs they got at walmart easily outdrive and beat the score of guys with sets they paid out the a** for, just to show off.
