What is the simplest way to putt really good in golf?

  • I have really have been having trouble on the greens on my home golf course. What is an easy way to putt really good?

  • Answer:

You must be able to visualize the ball dropping into the hole. You have to have the general idea of the behavior of the ball. Specifically you must know what will happen to the ball when you make your stroke. Namely that is the speed of the greens which varies with temperature and hydration, the force of gravity which acts upon your ball even while it is "at rest" and will continue to do when you hit it (the slope and hills in the green), and the force of your stroke which is when your ball will stop moving due to friction. With this is mind, calculate the path of the ball to the hole and stroke it. It's not going to change your life whether you make the putt or not so tell yourself that when you get anxious about a putt. It's just a game. Just tell yourself you are a good putter and have confidence in reality. Good luck.

This is my routine as I walk up to my ball on the green. 1. Mark it (if necessary) 2. Walk around to the back of the hole, crouch down, and read the break. 3. Walk back behind my ball, looking at uphill/downhill slope of the putt from the side. 4. Crouch behind my ball and read the break again. 5. Establish a point where I want to aim the ball (a darker spot on the green, for example). 6. Line up for my putt, take 2 practice strokes. 7. Stroke the putt. Another tip is to not read any break into putts that are straight. Lots of putts turn out to have no break. I used to do that sometimes, too. At first I'd think it was straight, but then I'd read some break into it that really wasn't there, and I ended up missing the putt. So don't spend too much time reading them, or you'll end up making false reads. Maybe that will help. Good luck.

Three basics. 1. The putt is a stroke. Back swing, impact, follow thru. 2 square stance to the ball. 3 upright body position and head still through the stroke.

Get to the course early. Practice putting on the practice green to get a feel for the speed of the greens. 8 out of 10 times a straight putt toward the center of the hole at the correct speed will get you close enough to make a tap in for a second putt, unless you have really tricky greens with different levels and slopes and a lot of water near by. A good drill is to drop 3 golf balls in a line, each about 2 to three feet apart and progressively farther from the hole. Putt the closest, then the second then the third balls. You'll get a better feel for how hard to hit the ball, and you can learn from the break of the first ball where to aim the 2nd and 3rd balls. You might want to try out several putters too, and see if one or another gets you better results. I like a putter with a softer feel, it gives me better distance control. Some putters, feel "dead" that you don't get a good sense of the energy you transmit to the ball and speed will be inconsistant. I also prefer a straight shaft to my putter, the offset for me seems more difficult to align the ball to the target. You need to figure out what works for you. (I use an older Never Compromise Zi Sigma putter with the "gray matter" insert. Before that I liked the soft brass classic Bullseye Putter.)
