How do you turn left if you're riding in the bike lane?

What should one do when by themselves on a bike at a left turn lane?

  • Answer:

I know exactly what you mean. I encounter a couple intersections on my commute that won't turn green until a car trips it. I've heard (although I can't confirm it) that if a light is red for over 3 minutes, you can proceed as if it were a stop sign. Usually, what I'll do in these cases is make a right on red, then make a U-turn when it's safe, and then proceed straight through the intersection. Or sometimes I'll make 3 rights and proceed that way. It's a pain, but you do what you have to do.

I am not sure whether you drive on left or right where you are and if you are a motor cyclist (biker) or a push cyclist. In either case you stop and wait for the lights to change. Even with sensors at the lights they still take some time to change. If I was on my own and it was very quiet I would still wait for about 30 seconds for the lights to change, if they did not change in that time I woud turn left with care. Hope that helps.
