Why are SUVs in RWD when in 2x4 mode?

So i have a 97 benz rwd e320. can someone explain why its a one wheel wonder?

  • Why is it in one wheel spin mode basically one wheel is pushing all three :'(. And for some reason I also dont have the option to turn on off the traction

  • Answer:

Well, rear wheel drive just means power is being sent to the rear. It doesn't mean that both the wheels have to have power, just one, and it will still be rear wheel drive. That isn't too uncommon either. It is much cheaper to put a simple differential that sends power to one wheel than it is to power both wheels as you need to design some slip for when you are turning because the inside wheels will move slower than the outside wheels. BMW does this on all their non M cars. In most cases, you won't notice a thing. Only in motorsports, highly spirited driving, and maybe oil on that one specific wheel will you notice something.
