What is a good mountain bike frame?

I am 154cm tall (5 foot/5foot 1ish) and am looking for a new mountain bike. What size frame should I buy?

  • My current mountain bike is too large I think I cannot stand over the top tube properly it's too high. I am about 5 foot tall (154cm) what size frame should I go for?

  • Answer:

I can't give you a number because different brands fit differently, but the following will work. Make sure you have a couple of inches of stand over clearance when standing over the top tube. The next important number is the top tube length. Shoot for a 90 to 100 mm stem and test ride bike making a note of the toptube length. Find the one where the bike has a natural feel to it and you feel confident when you ride it, turn it, go down steep hills, etc. This test ride will factor in many other items such as head tube angle, and various frame geometry's. Try to equilize all the bikes by having the same tire pressure for your test ride. The bike sit there and people play with them so make sure it is checked out before your test ride. Take notes!! This is the only way to get the best size/bike for you. There is no majic formula to get a size "number". Don't buy the number, buy the bike. Cheers - and have fun shopping. It must be fun!

small frame that is 15"

You need a woman specific frame. Try looking at some on line bike stores that provide such bikes/frames. To give you an idea, I am 5' 8" (roughly) and I prefer a 20" frame for the road and a bit smaller for off road riding. I can though, comfortably ride a 23" frame. 18" woman specific frames are readily available. A frame for women is differently proportioned to a small male frame to reflect the generally different sizes of a woman when compared to a man.

You can get away with a 26 inch, but a 24 is very likely perfect for you.

Visit the local bike shops and get fitted. You want a frame that is 59% of the length of your inseam and have 2-4 inches of clearance when standing over the top tube.

Definitely look for a women specific model at your height! I think you're going to need the smallest size available, which is around a 14" frame, and will give you a standover height of about 28". If your inseam is shorter than this (and this number is not the same as the inseam length in pants as it measures all the way from your crotch to the floor) you're going to have to get a better quality kids frame or have something custom made.

You can test out if a bike is good for you by standing over it with the top tube between your legs, you should be able to stand without it jamming your crotch. When it comes to the seat adjust it so that when you're pedaling and your legs extend without locking.

try getting a 24 inch or smaller frame

Adjust the seat to it's lowest point, and if you can stand comfortably on both legs it's pretty much the correct size. So when an accident occurs you easily brake and catch your balance with both legs, you don't want to fall off and if someone happens to catch you on camera you'll be on fail blog:(
