What are career options available in geology?

I'm an INTJ. Indian. MBA. Top IIM. What are my career options?

  • I've graduated from one of India's top 3 IIMs a few years back and have been working in controls & compliance (finance) for the last few years in a leading manufacturing MNC. The biggest obstacle that I see to a successful corporate career is my http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INTJ These people are (I am) highly intellectual but fiercely introverted, NOT good at interacting with people, NOT good at networking and NOT good at handling even slightly emotional interactions in professional situations (read "high IQ but very low EQ"). However they're very comfortable spending hours (days) in isolation and in total concentration solving a problem. Needless to say I'm bored as hell (and hence not very successful) in my controls and compliance job. (It's a CA role. Everyone who's held the job previously has been a CA. None of them was an MBA. I have no background in accounting and landed up in this role due to circumstantial reasons.) But more importantly my INTJ nature is making me wonder if choosing the corporate world was the right career move in the first place.(OK I was a kid and thought cracking a so-called tough exam like the CAT will be fun! Like so many Indian kids do.) I've read a lot about INTJs. As expected, software development, technology, academia and research have traditionally been the top careers for INTJs. Now of course I didn't have this info back in my engg. days, or I'd not have chosen to earn an MBA in the first place. But now that I'm here, what are my best career options within the management/business field, where my INTJ personality type can be of advantage rather than disadvantage? Let's say I still don't have the courage to throw away all those lacs of IIM tuition fees and all these years. So ditching the MBA world altogether is not an option at the moment. Now of course, one of the options is to suck it up and try to copy others around me. But knowing myself, I don't think I'll get anywhere professionally (leave alone be truly successful) if I throw away the advantages brought about by my natural endowments and try to be something I'm not. Answers from fellow INTJs working in the corporate world are welcome. Have you found a career which makes (at least some) good use of your INTJ endowments instead of forcing you to hide them? Answers from those who've chosen alternative post-MBA careers (civil services, academia etc.) are welcome. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your career as compared to a traditional corporate career?

  • Answer:

Hi, One INTJ job profile would be being a Data Analyst / Data Scientist. It involves a bit of presentations - but most of your work would be about looking at big databases that companies collect and figure out what user behavior is conveying to the company. Since all your presentations and reports will be based on data, the 'Globe' junta will have no say, there will be no arguments based on egos etc. It'd also help if you choose a highly transparent organisation so that the work can speak for itself and you don't have to get political to get rewarded for your work. Hope this helps.

A fellow Indian INTJ here. Currently in one of the top IITs. Although not involved in the corporate world, I realized something recently that might be of help to you. I have two important characteristics: 1. I am always curious with a huge thirst for knowledge. 2. My favorite subject has always been economics. The only career option satisfying these criteria that I could think of is research in the field of economics. See if you could use the same approach.
