  • If I wanted a career working with a major publishing house or magazine, what sort of degree do I need?

    I agree about the point that most people working for magazines are freelancers. Creative Writing and Journalism BAs would do just as well as a BA in English. Most journalists didn't even study to become journalists. If you got talent and know how to write and, most importantly, report, then you should be fine. But getting a job at a magazine isn't very realistic. They buy stories from freelances and pay $x/per word. That's pretty much what I want to do. I'm graduating with BAs in Media and English in 2 semesters and off i go=) Good luck!

If you want to work in the publishing office, you will need a journalism degree. Also, experience and knowledge in the publisher's line of subject matter would be very helpful. Many of the authors do not work in the office, but work freelance and turn in manuscripts. Usually no degree is necessary for that if you write well and know your subject matter. Besides editorial duties in the office, there is also the marketing department (advertising, presentations, sales) and the production department (page layouts, photo scanning and color correction, art direction). Experience and understanding of the publishing environment are important, so a part-time job at a newspaper or smaller publisher would be very helpful.

If you want to write, then yeah journalism. There is also a business aspect, which would need a business degree or management.
