The Illuminati was a republican political club formed in Bavaria in the late 18th century. That is not US style Republican, they were anti-monarchist and the crowned heads of Europe didn't like that, specially after the US revolution. So they suppressed it and it ceased to exist about 1785. By about 1830 the last of the members had died of old age. There may be organisations calling themselves the Illuminati but they may as well be called the "wacky funsters". Search for "Robert Anton Wilson", "Robert Shea" and "Adam Wieshaupt". Obsession with them is just another symptom of American paranoia. If it's not the Illuminati, it's Communists, Muslims, black helicopters, Catholics or chem trails. All of it complete nonsense.
