Answer:
Fluid in transmission, flushed I think every 30,000 to 35,000 miles under normal use, severe use more often! Using correct fluid. cheap fluids not a good idea. Choose top quality products.

I had several Fords, but no tranny troubles.

In my experience, For makes great quality transmissions, but there are those random bad ones. In all of my Ford vehicles (1983 Mustang, 1988.5 EXP, 1992 Taurus, 1995 F-150, 2001 Maverick (Escape)) I've never had any type of transmission problems in any of them, and I drive 50,000 miles a year. So, putting 200,000+ miles on a transmission is nothing for me. Though, it could be like my dad. He owned a 2005 F-250 that the transmission went bad at 3,000 miles for no apparent reason. Ford ended up swapping out the transmission and never had a problem since then.

I do not know if the newer ones continue to have these problems but I bought a '97 Explorer with 90k miles and it had a 5 speed automatic tranny with overdrive. well, the tranny started slipping at about 97k or 98k miles and it cost $1k to have it all fixed. but it now has 120k miles and hasn't any tranny problems since. my guess is poor build quality with the trannys. i mean look at the 4.0 V6. it has about 120k miles and runs perfectly and always has. but these engines are made in cologne, germany. maybe if they used better trannys they wouldn't fail as much.

the transmission in that model was not particularly good quality but many fords run for very long periods, had a 94 f150 (man trans) with close to 300,000 miles. Just replaced trans fluid every once in a while

Most of Fords problems were with the overdrive transmissions. Any car with a C6 trany should never have any problems. according to a transmission mechanic I spoke to recently, I was told that Ford has gotten most of the bugs out of the older tranys.
