Better engine for a 1997 ford escort?

I have a 1997 ford escort it has a electric fan in the engine but when the engine is running it does not turn?

  • does this only come on whe the engine over heats

  • Answer:

A quick way to check to see if the electric fan itself works is to turn on the A/C and see if the fan comes on, if it doesn't there is a problem. It should also come on periodically at when fully warmed up. If its not overheating or low on coolant I wouldn't worry about it.

your fan will only come on at a set temputure which is controlled by the radiator fan swicth when it reaches temp.

it should come on at a pre set temp somewere around 210 and 220 degrees

It doesn't run all the time, only when the engine is getting hot. this point varies from car to car, On my lil sis's 1996 escort the fan doesn't come on till its around the "a" in normal on the temperature gauge. If your worried, just open the bonnet and hold the engine revs high till you see it start, the temperature raises fairly quickly when the cars stationary so it'll only take a minute or two.

The fan, like everything else is controlled by the PCM. It only comes on when the temperature reaches a certain point as shown by the coolant temperature sensor. If you suspect that the fan is bad, your first check is to use a jumper with a fuse in it to hook it directly to the battery. Checks of the coolant temperature sensor, wiring and fuses might even be needed. I'm figuring that unless the engine overheats when you're just standing still, the fan is probably working fine.

The electric fan shouldn't be turning when you first turn on the car. Most cars fans will only turn on when the engine is close to overheating. Some cars will actually have dual fans, one that runs when the engine is warm and another to turn on when the engine is overheating. You're fans are fine as long as they do turn on. You might want to check the fans after you've been driving a while. As long as at least one is turning the system is operating fine.

the engine doesn't necessarily have to over heat for it to come on just when it starts to get warm and it doesn't come on while you are driving because the air is cooling it if it does start over heating and the fan doesnt help you can turn on your heater in the car to help draw some of the heat off the engine

the fan should come on when the temp gauge reaches the O on the "NORM" gauge, on older fords such as this the fan wont carry on running once the engine has been stopped. check the fuse box for a blown fuse. unplug the blue multiplug on the thermostate housing, using a thick piece of wire to bridge the gap between the two connection holes within the plug, if the fan comes on (while ignitions on) and it doesnt while getting hot your temp sender is screwed or the switch is.

on some very cold days the fan might not come on.It should come on when the engine reaches normal operating temperature approx 82 degrees if it doesn't come on at this point then check that there is power to the temp sensor switch which is normally fitted in the rad,if there is power bridge the switch out across the two terminals and if the fan comes on then you need a new switch to check if the motor is working take a live feed from the battery direct to the motor by passing everything make sure you have good earth connections

No! it should come on between half a three quarters normally. Get the switch on the radiator checked and the fan itself. Also look at the fuse box for a blown one
