What is your philosophy in nursing?

Peronal Nursing Philosophy?

  • I'm a nursing student, and have been assigned to write my own "personal nursing philosophy" and I have no clue where to begin. I believe that Nursing is the caregivers ...show more

  • Answer:

Oh, please don't say anything about being a mother nurturing the ill. That sounds so patronizing. You have a specialized education that you share with your patients to help them optimize their personal health. You can also use your "therapeutic use of self" to show them you care and are there for them through life's crisis. A nurse is privileged to be there at all the greatest trials in a persons life. You are there for births, disease, accidents, and at the end you are there to guide the patient and the families through the strangness and fear when death comes. We may forget that when people come to us that they are often frightened and ignorant about what is happening to them because we are so caught up in the technical details of their care. It is our duty to teach, comfort and use our skills for the betterment of our patients. And please don't forget that our patients have a lot to teach us also. It is an honor and a privilege for a nurse to share in the pain and joy of those in her care.

All you have to do is search your soul. You chose to be a Nurse, why? the answer is with you, and thats what you need to write down and expand upon. Good luck. Fantastic profession.

Daydreamer

This kind of thing absolutely drove me crazy when I was in nursing school. You DO have a clue where to begin; you want to nurture your patients, and that's your start. You can expand on that; "like a mother" might mean that you would look out not only for the physical, but for the spiritual and emotional as well. You can also write about WHY you feel this way; are there things in your past that led you to being this sort of caregiver, and/or someone who inspired you? HOW do you intend to incorporate this into your practice? :) Have fun writing!
