Why is a bouncy ball so bouncy?

If you have a bead and out it in water it will sink. but if youo put a mini bouncy ball it floats. why?

  • why does a 1 inch bouncy ball will not osink but a small bead will?

  • Answer:

The short answer is that the ball, being hollow displaces more water than it weighs, the bead, being solid except for the hole for the string, less. The displacement of the water is what holds up the ball. Years ago, an old guy named Archimedes explained all this with a few equations. It is possible to make ships that float out of very heavy material (concrete, steel) if the interior space is kept dry. They then displace more water than they weigh. Beyond displacement, there is sometimes a surface tension effect for smaller objects. A needle may be made to float even though it is more dense than water. There are bugs that also use this effect. Their feet dent the water, but they do not sink in.

This is a question of buoyancy. In other words how much air is contained within a certain substance. Think of it like this, a bowling ball will sink, but a hollow bowling ball weighing the same amount will float. Air is much less dense than water. Think of a submarine it uses ballast tanks. When it wants to sink it allows water to fill the tank thus increasing the weight of the sub overcoming the mass of air within itself. When it rises all it has to do is pump out the extra water weight and up she floats. Simple really the real answer is in the amount of buoyancy per cubic foot of air. So here is the short answer: the bead contains less air than the bouncy ball.
