I am running a database intensive website that receives heavy worldwide traffic. What would you suggest is the best hosting service to use in order to be able to provide all our customers with quick loading speeds?

I like Rackspace too (I also work there) but you should check out Object Rocket. Very fast Mongo.db hosting: https://plus.google.com/111091089527727420853/posts/HNR9pWFnSjA has a video with the founder.

Rackspace hybrid customers can use the RackConnect service to combine dedicated database servers with scalable arrays of cloud servers handling your app and web serving needs. http://Rackspace.com Notice of affiliation: I'm proud to say, I work for Rackspace.

Rackspace is decent. I use http://ftcservers.net/.com they allow co-location, are not terribly expensive, and I believe allow for intern al networks. Regardless, plan on having at least two (one primary, one mirrored failover) database servers, and I would suggest four to six (2 - 3. Active, 2 - 3 for failover). Then, have your web server on a seperate machine(s) using memcached.

Rackspace has a lot of experience with high-traffic, global sites and high performance databases. Check this page for some examples http://www.rackspace.com/cloud/cloud_bursting/ Contact us, or contact me directly (gerardo.dada at rackspace com) - we can guide you thorugh multiple options from a simple, scalable PaaS to dedicated servers with a hardware global load balancer

While your hosting provider is a key component for providing the performance you want, it sounds like what you will really need to consider is what your database infrastructure will look like. If you want something that is write intensive, transactional (SQL) and can scale, you might want to check out the Clustrix database on Rackspace. (I work at Clustrix).
