The population is not self-regulating. If you look at the history of human population, the only time when there was a net decrease in human population was during the black plague. Even during World War II, the human population rose. In 1900 the human population was 1.6 billion and in 2000 it was 6 billion. That is not self-regulation. It is exponential growth. I suggest that you read "The Medea Hypothesis" by Peter D. Ward, a geologist and biologist at the University of Washington. He shows that the Gaia Hypothesis is not supported by the physical evidence. After all, with five major mass extinctions in geological history plus one that is happening right now, the idea of a self-regulating earth makes no sense.
