How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?

  • "How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?" A question from my job application! They also asked, "Describe the skills or ...show more

  • Answer:

I do have a wide range of abilities in my classroom! So does everyone! I have reading ages from 8-15, math levels from 3 years below age level to 4 years above. I have kids who can barely write a correct sentence to those writing two years above grade level. My basic strategy is ability grouping. I work with groups of students who need to learn the same thing, while the others work independently. I choose learning intentions that meet the needs of the group that I am working with, and independent activities that review and build the skills that the other groups need to practice for when they aren't with me. I see three reading groups a day, and two to three maths groups. I rotate around my students when writing. They all have individual goals that they are working towards. Having said this - it is my solution and my approach. If that isn't how you've done it or would do it - there is no point putting my answer on your job application! You'd only get asked about it in an interview and fall apart on the answer, because it isn't something you've done! How would YOU address the wide range of abilities and skills in YOUR classroom. Think about learning styles, abilities, and the curriculum requirements of your state.
