Which states require school teachers to eventually obtain a master's degree?

Do teachers have to get a masters degree?

  • do all teachers have to get a masters degree? are their certain states that dont require a masters degree, just bachelor? i am talking about high school teachers

  • Answer:

In michigan, all you have to have is a bachelors degree. You do not have to get a masters. Michigan does require teachers to take continuing education classes to remain licensed, however. Since you are required to take classes anyways, and you get a higher salery if you have a masters, most teachers now get a masters degree. (you also don't have to take any further continuing education classes once you get a masters). neither school districts nor the state pay for the classes you are required to take, however.

It is according to what state you are teaching in - some states require a teacher to complete their degree within 5 years of receiving their teaching certification (Kentucky).

All K-12 educators in the United States must have a Bachelor's degree in some form of education. The higher a degree that you have, the more money the school district will pay you.

california requires a bachelors degree, and a proper teaching credential. having a masters degree means you earn more money, but can actually be a hinderance in getting a job initially because districts want to save money.

yes, in New York state, we need a Master's degree for a teaching license.

it's the teacher's decision to obtain a master's degree. if the teacher wants to grow professionally, then he/she must have to get one. also, most schools assign teachers with master's degree as department heads so having one is an advantage. i believe some schools pay for the tuition of their faculty who wants to study further and they also give study leaves with pay. also, if a teacher wants to teach in college and universities, he/she must at least have a master's or a doctorate degree.
