Why do dogs eat their own poop?

Why do dogs eat their poop?

  • seriously, why? its really conserning me and my (white) tiger and i are scared for the health of my little pooky bear Geraldine.

  • Answer:

Dogs eat their own poo for two main reasons: The first is that it still contains some calories, so it was a survival mechanism for their wild ancestors. The also instinctively eat the poo of puppies to protect the litter from infection and discovery by other predators. In pet dogs it is an unpleasant habit but, other than the transmission of parasites, does not seem to do much harm. Worm your dog regularly and try not to leave feces lying about in the garden. Anecdotally feeding pineapple chunks to the dog is supposed to reduce coprophagy. In practice I have not found it makes much difference though. Be careful that poo eating does not become an attention seeking game. Some owner find the behavior gets worse the more attention the dog gets for doing it.

I love the cute little name GERALDINE!!!! Anyway as you probably know poop is old food that has been digested, and so dogs, with their sharp sense of smell, can still smell the food, and so they try to eat it. Its not healthy for them though so dont let little Geraldine get sick!!

because they want to!

Sometimes they have been harshly reprimanded when pooping in the house, so they eat it to keep from getting into trouble. Sometimes they are so hungry they have to eat anything to survive. Once they start its almost impossible to get them to stop.

Well it's not a good thing, but I see it a lot. My cousin's dogs used to chase each other around and eat each other's poo. My dog eats poo out of the cat's litter box and poo from under my rabbit hutch. Maybe some dogs just like the taste of poo? Maybe it has some connection to butt-sniffing? Perhaps it is because domesticated dogs are so inbred that they instinctively eat poo. Maybe they have been starved long enough that they eat it? Is there a nutritional value? I learned in mammalogy that rabbits eat their own poo. The first time they poo, they are black pellets - they will eat these to digest them a second time. Then the next poo are brown pellets. Dogs eating poo... it's just what they do.
