Do some humans only see in black and white?

Is it true most animals (besides humans) see only in black and white?

  • I heard that cats and dogs see only in black and white and most other animals, too. Do you know what the facts are about this?

  • Answer:

When I was young, my uncle mentioned to me that deer were a color-blind animal. I have later learned that being color blind in some instances is better for separating out camoflauge. I suppose that this would give the deer a slight advantage in detecting some predators and thus this adaptation has stayed with the animal.

I believe the basis of the belief that dogs see only black and white is because of the number cones and rods like hirsutemustelid said. I don't remember what those terms mean, but I learned in biology many years ago that one of those components are missing in dogs eyes. I think some color-blind people are also affected the in same way. I'm no expert so these thoughts might not be entirely accurate, but just wanted to share agreement with hirsutemustelid.

I do not know about the term " most ", but there are three visual groups; monochromatic, dichromatic ( dogs ) and tri chromatic ( humans ). Some animals also see into the ultra violet ( some birds ) and the infrared ( some snakes )

Some critters can see in more colors than us (some birds and insects). Other primates see in color. Cats can percieve most colors except red. Interesting link:

Yes its true because inside almost ALL animals eyes one of its components (I'm not sure of its name) is colorless leading to that animals can only see in Black and White P.S. (did you know that Bulls can't see red?) ;)

The story goes: Predatory animals can see only black and white, like Lions, Wolves etc. Most other animals have a smaller color-scale than a human's. Depending on the type of dog that you have, their color-scale can vary quite greatly. At least this is what's being tought to us Game Rangers in South Africa.

it's a matter of cones and rods in the eye. i think it's cones that see color and many animals have less or none of these. birds definitely have color vision which is why they have such vibrant plumage; to attract mates.

hirsutemustelid

completely dependent on the animal. Most insects see in colour better than us: they see a greater spectrum. Others like dogs have only black and white but they see better at night. thus each species has evolved to have eyesight according to its needs to survive. the eye contains two types of receptor: rods which see only B and W and 3 types of cones which see colour: either red, green or blue. Different animals have different mixes. Isn't biology amazing!!!

Dogs can see in other colors besides black and white. Their color scale is not as advanced and vibrant as ours, but they can tell certain colors.

couldn't tell ya, but I'm pretty sure birds can see color. I have seen some studies but all I remember is vague at most. I remember dogs are definetly b&w , but not all animals are color blind. lots of animals out there ya know
