I like the following definition, which was once penned by an unknown author: A veteran is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Any person who has worn the uniform for more that 180 days in a row on active duty is a veteran. Reservist have a lenght of time also, but I don't know it. All veterans can go to the VA by the way. I served 12 years active and reserves and I am not disabled nor did I retire. Here is the def. for veteran. 1. A person who is long experienced or practiced in an activity or capacity: a veteran of political campaigns. 2. A person who has served in the armed forces. 3. An old soldier who has seen long service.

The Question I think you want answered, Every Veteran is anyone in the service, no matter where they serve, there chances of going into a conflict is not the only criteria, but during a War or conflict anyone that is in the service is still an important back up for services to the men on the front line. All keep the Military machine well oiled to supply and maintain readiness for new servicemen and servicewomen in basic training. But the front lines are always the the most dangerous and the servicemen and servicewomen are well respected for their bravery. The person in California might be called up at any time. If there is a casualty he may have to fill. Give total respect to anyone you know matter where they serve.

The legal definition is complete basic training and advanced training (your job), and spend 1 day with that MOS identifier.
