An awful lot of governments money is being saved and an awful lot of children are suffering. Everyone in the system have been put in a position where the truth about 'mainstreaming is to be kept quiet and only a 'positive' opinion is to be used. You will find many interesting answers to your question in the 'Special Ed section.

The idea is to keep disabled children in the classroom longer. For years, they were put in a separated class away from "normal" students. Now, they keep them in the classroom and only take them to a special class room when they need to much extra help on a certain subject. They will send "helpers" into the class room as much as they can. Kids sometimes learn best from other kids so this inclusion is a great idea. I am the mother of a disabled girl. She is now 25 and after 2 extra years of high school, she earned her diploma! Inclusion works for most kids! (She started school with a 25 word vocabulary.)

Mainstreaming is the practice of educating students with special needs in regular classes during specific time periods based on their skills. It has lead to changes because mainstream schools (schools that practice mainstreaming) have been very corrupt. Why else do you think that Maria Montessori created the Montessori method? She felt that inclusion was the best practice for schools to use. Unfortunately, that didn't help that much because there are mainstream schools still. She wanted world peace. She wanted so many things but still she couldn't do it because of all those people who supported mainstreaming. One day people will realize that inclusion is the best way. This is the definition for inclusion. Inclusion is the practice of educating students with special needs in regular classes for all or nearly all of the day instead of in special education classes. Just remember the reason why there is "least restrictive environment" is because of the discrimination towards special needs people in the past. Most special needs people were treated horribly. That's why they created laws to protect the special needs or people who were different. They don't deserve to be treated like this. I feel awful whenever I hear about this but it only makes me stronger when I advocate for people.

"mainstreaming" is simply placing the student in regular classes, with all the mainstream students, teachers, etc. Least Restrictive Environment is basically finding the class/program/teacher which allows each child to develop to his/her full potential, without restricting or inhibiting learning just a couple of fancy terms with simple definitions

Main streaming is putting the person into the meat grinder of education that churns out a lot of people who can tell you the square root of a jar of pickles but they cannot take the lid off.
