Is there a site that offers payment in Paypal?

Is there a website that offers free information about the person or company behind a specific phone number?

  • When I get a call from an unknown number, I usually don't answer and wait to Google it first. However, this often leads to a multitude of sites that want a fee for any information, and they usually don't say what information they have. Sometimes I get clear information that it's a telemarketer of some sort, so I continue to search unknown numbers. Is there any site that offers more information than "this number exists" without any payment? Even just a name of a person or business would be helpful. Surely someone has come up with a crowd-sourced wiki-style site for this sort of thing...

  • Answer:

There are a couple, but they just provide info for published lines (personal and business).  If the line is unpublished, a cell line, or a VOIP line (which many calling centers & phone spammers use now), then it generally won't show up. One good one is http://www.phonevalidator.com/ This will at least let you know if the number is a landline or cell, and who the provider is. If the number is "spoofed" (also common with spammers and collectors), none of the sites will help you at all.

True caller is mobile app that does this. Depending on your location their are many reverse phone email address. Etc sites that do this , the U.S has heaps, though it is not legal in Australia so what data there is is outdated mostly. Google reverse phone search. Also I know that most countries have a white pages software type disc that u can purchase every year that has everything about anyone with a phone listing regardless of network provider or unlisted, there are copies u can download through file share if u want to bother with the hassle of finding a genuine download. These are the ones that these spam  companies buy that provide all data that is used for product to consumer mapping and such.will update exact name when I find it

No, this information has value, so no one provides it for free. Those services that used to offer even the most basic data (like what you are requesting) went to fee-based because if keeps the servers running and pays a decent salary, unlike a free service.

Not really, at least not in any kind of  comprehensive, accurate way.  Like the online background check and missing person sites, many "phone tracer" sites appear free initially but then, once they rope you in, they ask for your credit card info before they provide the "full details".  Unfortunately, once you've paid, the info provided is likely to be incomplete, very dated, or just plain wrong and good luck with that "money back guarantee".  If the number belongs to a long-standing, published,  landline phone, you MIGHT get some useful details, but that doesn't happen often these days.  Today, people move, change carriers (i.e., "port" their number), drop their landline service so often, that these supposedly helpful sites are all but worthless.  Since the breakup of the "Ma Bell" monopoly years ago, there is no centralized database even for listed, landline numbers anymore and, if the number in question is a cellphone, fax line, pager, payphone, Skype, VOIP, Magic Jack, etc., fuggitaboutit!  Our detective agency has the sources and techniques to provide the CNA (Customer Name & Address) for any phone line in the U.S. and most international numbers.  Yes, you will have to pay for it but the info will be current and correct.

You can access many databases that collect this public information and get it for free, but nothing can legally provide private or unpublished information without prosecution under federal law. Using such services will likely land you with a criminal record, jail time in a federal prison, and probably the center of a few civil lawsuits if you are not very careful.
