Can you really see Russia from Alaska?

Is Alaska a more awesome place because you can see Russia from there?

  • A story came out recently that you can indeed see Russia from Alaska Does that make Alaska a more awesome place to visit?

  • Answer:

I'm from Alaska you can't see Russia...Maybe from the top of Mount McKinley, but people don't really hang out there...most of us are cultivating our rightwing nutjob-ism in little igloos ...while generalizing insanely. We refer to the rest of the country as the "lower 48" and laugh about the way people stress about careers, live in cities in which the sky is framed by buildings and illuminated with a sickly purple orange...and how people actually go jogging on SIDEWALKS...hah hah. If you've never been there before, Alaska is a sweet place to visit because of the drive from Anchorage to Seward, you can rent a car for 11 bucks a day in the early fall, put your tent in the truck and breathe in some of the last fresh air on the planet... And the russian side, kamtchka, is beautiful as well, although they let the oil industry get a little out of hand, so its like alaska after a few years in Vegas.

Yes, Alaska is a cool place to visit, right-wing religious nut-jobs aside. Apparently, being able to "see" Russia from there makes you a foreign policy expert too.

I love how people feel so free to joke about this now. As someone who grew up listening to Russia threaten the U.S. with nukes every other day, I don't think it's something to joke about. If you think they're all warm and fuzzy towards us now, think again.

100 years ago my Grandfather would walk/dogsled his way from the tip of Alaska to Russia and trade furs and goods with the Russians.

You can't see Russia from Alaska unless your vision can bend with the curve of the earth....and yes Alaska is an awesome place to live...IF you fit in to that inviro....

You can see Canada by looking south across the Detroit River, which I always thought was kinda awesome, so maybe seeing Russia could be.
