  • Answer:

I live in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia. The mountain range runs along the eastern coast and has everything a nature-loving scenery-seeker could hope for. I haven't explored a lot of the country out west, but definately consider the Appalachian mountains. As for how we feel about the English, I can't speak for everyone else, but I love meeting people from other countries and cultures. Hope you come soon and have a wonderful time.

There are a huge number of places you could visit. Here are some that I know. Minnesota - it's not called the land of 1000 lakes for nothing. Not many visitors, but lots of trees/lakes/rivers/streams. New England, especially northern New England, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts. The beauty of the Berkshires, the lakes and rivers of Vermont and New Hampshire, the rugged coastline and interior lakes of Maine, there is much to visit here. It's also a central area for American History - don't miss that! And the interaction of the native american with the colonists in that history. The Adirondak Mountains in upstate eastern New York - from the Great Lakes on the west to the many lakes, streams and forests in Adirondak National Park, the State of New York has just this sort of landscape. The New York State Oneida tribe is in this area, also. Shenandoah to the Blue Ridge, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina - Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway present a wonderful landscape of rolling mountains, rivers, lakes and streams, intertwined with American History. Virginia is particularly rich in the latter, with Civil war history right up against the mountains, Jamestown,Williamsburg, Jefferson's home in Monticello, and of Course Mount Vernon and others against Washington, DC. In DC is the country's great National Museum of the American Indian, and in the south end of the Blue Ridge, you can visit Cherokee North Carolina and that area. The truth is that I could mention a couple dozen more - the Natchez trace in Tennesee, central Pennsylvania, most of West Virginia, Oregon and Washington states in the west, and on and on and on. These above are the ones I know best- and recommend highly. The southwest has fewer trees/lakes/rivers, but more native americans - check out the four corners Navajo reservation if some desert is to your liking. The Americans are very kindly disposed toward the English, and very friendly toward them.

Last pow wow I went to, I met people from France, only the grandma spoke english with a very thick accent. A family from Korea, the daughter spoke a little english. Another couple from Japan, they were excited to see "Real Indians" At our gatherings everyone is welcome that come with RESPECT. I've no problem with English, it's the 'americans' that have the dirty hands. As for Scenery California has EVERYTHING from mountains capped in snow to Deserts, Meadow to beaches. Where I live is about an Hour drive to Yosemite Park, 2 hours to the coast, 4 hours to San Fransisco. There are a few sites where there are California Indian Museums. The best one I recommend is Kule Loklo, It has a reconstructed Village. The way they set it up, it looks like everyone just went out fishing and will be back any minute. There's Also Chaw'se, Grinding rock park. Pow wow season is from april to november weather permitting. beach wise, I'd recommend Morrow State Beach. Great surf the people are friendly, good tide pools with purple starfish. any more questions, just shoot me an email.

The Appalachian mountains - especially in North Carolina are very nice for pretty vistas and aw some streams small rivers and waterfalls. There are very few lakes there however. Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are aw some places for lakes rivers and unspoiled forest. there are also large populations of Native Americans in these states. They are best enjoyed between June and August. But the leaves are beautiful in the Fall ...it is just hard to time perfectly for the fall color, and you run the risk of rather miserable weather if your timing is off. The region of the "four corners" and near Yellowstone National Park has great history and native American populations as well as amazing scenery rivers mountains etc. Wyoming, western Montana, Colorado, Idaho area... As for how we feel about the British, my impression is that people love the accent and have a pretty positive attitude about the British in general, probably even more accepting than of other Europeans. The Appalachians may be somewhat less open in the more remote small towns, but still very warm people if you treat them with respect.

Visit the smoky mountains in tennessee, it's plentiful in beautiful scenery, rushing rivers, mountain vistas, expansive valleys, and has lots of wildlife...see cade's cove, chimmneys state park, roaring fork motor nature trail, hike to beautiful natural waterfalls, or drive to a few of them....drive to clingman's dome (the highest point in the southeast) and experience an amazing sunset or sunrise....the smoky mountain national park is pristine, and has over 1 million visitors per year...most roads follow a river, and lake Douglas is nearby....the towns of Gatlinburg and pigeon forge are near, and filled with many different attractions, resturants, etc. Wears valley is also nearby and gorgeous to see.

Michigan has many, many (!) lakes and river, and quite a few trees as well. You can find many state parks with both beautiful forests and lake side beaches. Tequominum (sp) Fall is also a spectacular river/water fall in the UP. Michigan is also a good choice if you want to learn more about Native Americans. Moat Americans, myself anyways, like English people just fine.

Pennsylvania is a beautiful state and not fa from Niagra falls and amidst lots of beautiful countryside. Theres lots of places and ways to dicover more about the native American Indian culture too. Most Americans accept the English okay although there will be some 'banter' about the civil war and who speaks the "proper English", but generally, its all in good fun.
