  • Answer:

DO NOT DRIVE. worst option out there. cheaper is any hotel on an outlying Metro stop. even the furthest stop out is less than an hour from L'enfant Station in the heart of DC tourist stuff( the Mall) many of the Metro stops in outlying areas have parking.. free on weekends, fairly reasonable during the week although you will need a smart card for most garages.

You'd do best to get a hotel outside the city and park your car at one of the outlying metro stations for your day of sight seeing. You'll get a much better deal on the room and you can avoid driving a car into the city to try to park. Plus any hotel in the city and close in in VA is going to charge you $25 or so to park in their garage.

NW DC is always the safest, and the other parts are not. If you are willing to drive about 10 to 30 minutes to DC, then you could always stay in Arlington. It's a little bit cheaper there and it is pretty convenient. I always take the metro, since it is convenient. Once you get to DC, most of the attractions are close together.
