  • Answer:

My little sister, who is now 23, dropped out of high school at 15. She got her GED at 16 and went to community college at 20. She leaves for Columbia University in NYC this December. (BTW, Columbia recruited her to come there, she never applied. She got an email a few weeks ago from the Dean of Admissions that said, "We've been trying to get you to come to CU for the past 2 years. Registration for the Spring semester ends 10/15, please send the necessary paperwork so that you can be enrolled this spring.) Once she graduates, she's going to law school. No one would have guessed this because she hated school from the start. So, your friend needs to get her GED, go to CC, get good grades and she'll be able to transfer to a university.

Well, if she at least graduates, then she'll be farther ahead than others... A community college will take her, but she'll need to take the aptitude tests, like everyone else- most cc don't care much about your high school grades. After she stays there a while, she can transfer. OR... She could locate a vocational school that doesn't look much at transcripts. Several "artsy" colleges rely more on an interview than high school records....

well, she probably wont get accepeted straight from High school, so probably go to the junior college for the 2 years, do GOOD and then transfer, there'll be a better chance. its just about doing good, and dont drop out!

Her best route into a good college is to go to community college first, and prove herself there. If she does well in community college, that will count very heavily in college admissions, and her bad high school record won't hold her back. But she must do well in community college. That may mean she needs to move away from home, so she's not still around the people that are holding her down. There are community colleges that have dorms, as well as private junior colleges that have dorm, if she's interested in that.

For starters she'll have to clean up her act. If she can score well on the SAT, and I mean amazingly well she might be able skip community college and go straight to a university if she can prove to them she's changed her ways. A good SAT can often cancel out bad grades but only to a point. Otherwise, she'll have to start at a CC and then transfer.

yeah they pretty much just want your money...college is a lot easier than high school at least in ny i got a regents diploma a bunch of crap

Sure, she can get into college... But getting into a 'good' college would be very difficult, especially she has bas grades and a bad history... have her do well in the SAT's, or perhaps create a unique talent. But as long as she passes college (any college), she has another chance of getting a good career.

If she gets a diploma or a GED, she can go to college. She should probably start at the local Community College and talk to the counselors about whether or not she can go to a "good" college (it all depends on what she things "good" is). Good luck! :-)
