  • Answer:

Most professors are expected to teach a mix of classes, some of which are much harder than "BASIC". If a university hires someone with a PhD, he/she can teach both freshman-level classes and advanced graduate classes. It makes sense to hire someone with a PhD who can teach both types of classes. Some "basic" classes (like freshman calculus) are indeed taught by lecturers with only a BA/BS or MA/MS. However, this isn't usually necessary because you can find PhDs who are desperate for a job and are willing to take a low-paying lecturing positions. If you have both someone with a PhD and someone with a BA competing for the same position, you might as well hire the PhD, right? Also, I doubt there are many CEOs with only a bachelor's degree. Most have MBAs or similar types of degrees.

To become a CEO of a company, you spend years at lower level jobs working your way up. Professors do the same thing, but instead of working for a company for years, they are attending graduate school.
