  • I really want to join a sorority, but i'm scared i can't afford it. On average, how much do sororities cost a year....and is there a lot of financial help out there to help ...show more

  • Answer:

Being a part of a sorority is not cheap. I went to a very small school and my dues were $60 a month (and that was almost 10 years ago so I can't imagine what it would be now). And I've never heard of any sort of financial aid for it. It's not required so the school won't do it and usually (I hate to say it) you're lucky to get in as a full paying member much less ask them to pay for your dues as an incomming freshmen. Not a surprise that many "mommies and daddies" end up writing that check for their kids. I understand that these groups can be good things and that some of them do community service. But frankly, all of the sisterly stuff is fluff. It doesn't matter one bit. When I transfered to another school, I didn't have "sisters." I had people who walked past me in WalMart and would only give a smile; not a word. If you can go from being a popular, active member of the sorority to a stranger just because you decided to switch schools then it is a very short lived, rather fake friendship. Now, i'm sure it's not like there everywhere but college is a unique place where grades should always be your focus and activites like this are secondary. I imagine that at most schools the dues are pretty high and if you're already worried about it, it probably means that you don't need to create that extra burden on yourself to try to pay dues each month. It's dues, plus t-shirts, plus fundraisers, plus parties, then special projects. Dues are just to be a member. It cost more money to participate in the activities!

It's not cheap. Perhaps things have changed since I went to school. At that time the POINT of sororities was that sororities were groups of young women who wanted to be with other people who COULD afford it. There were charitable activities, but with sorority sisters as the source, not the recipient(s) of charity.

It depends on what sort of sorority. If there's no house involved, it'll be about $20/month. Honestly though, it gets expensive if there is a house involved. Especially if you don't live in the house after the second year, it gets REALLY expensive.
