I lived in on-campus student apartments for a year, and two of my suitemates were in a sorority (why in the student apts? who knows). Anyways, they were some of the nicest girls I've ever met...overly nice.. a bit on the fake side though lol Don't get me wrong, I could partay partay with the rest of them, but when they had a function and I'd suddenly find the apartment filled with sorority/frat members, they were some of the rudest people I've met. I woke up early one morning during the week for an early class and found that my suitemates' "brothers" and "sisters" had eaten almost all of MY food, drank MY orange juice, and left the living room a wreck. How I know it was them? I had a cutesy note on the fridge -- "OMG, we're SO sorry.. some of the frat guys ate your food... we'll pay you back!" Of course they never did. Biatches LOL

It annoyed me to see girls dressed the same carrying around the same little polka-dotted book bags. I thought going to college meant creating your own individualism, not following someone else's.

you're gonna get a lot of BS answers based on stereotypes or people who have heard stories but never experienced greek life at college. That said, i was in a frat for all 4 years of college and it was great. The experience depends a lot on what college you go to and what sorority you choose. Hazing mostly happens in the bigger/more popular sororities and can range from the bizarre (your mom's story) to run of the mill embarassing stuff (watch the hazing scenes from the movie Dazed and Confused) and mostly involves drinking. #1 be safe whatever they get you to do.....and rest assured you don't have to be in a house to have a good time at college, but i would recommend joining if you find a group of chicks you like hanging around with.

I think Branch Barcadri (above) is spot on. There are a lot of stereotypes some true and some not. I would encourage you to check your reasons for wanting to join a sorority - what exactly are you looking for. Also, my test for any greek organization is to ask about the values and to see if the members are living those values. A group has got to be about more than social gatherings. See if they are encouraging their members to grow or learn things from one another or bond around activities that dont involve alcohol. Anything else is fluff and not worth wasting your time and money on.

A sorority is any organization that was established on the basis of creating a sisterhood. Every woman has a different reason as to why they decided to join a sorority, but it is nonetheless, a remarkable experience. I, personally, decided to join an organization that practiced real sisterhood without the troubles of hazing. I am a very proud sister of my sorority and would never allow anyone to make me feel unworthy in order to join anything. But of course, every organization is different. Every organization has different traditional ties. Therefore, you will never know what you will have to do in order to earn the privilege of being called a lifetime member until you actually pledge. The pros of joining a fraternity/sorority are gaining lifetime relationships with people all over the world. You will have intense networking abilities because a CEO of a company could very well be your soror or frat brother. And of course, that is just ONE of the many pros. A con can probably be the stereotypes. Many people who are not members of greek related organizations have misinterpreted ideas of what it consist of and many organizations are labeled incorrectly. Better to be in a sorority? I, as a proud sorority girl, think that I made the perfect choice. But... is a sorority for everyone?? NO.
