Answer:
There are several 'bad neighborhoods' in SF. They're not at all like the -slums- you see in Chicago, NYC, Wash. DC, or Detroit, but they're still bad neighborhoods. They're places a girl shouldn't walk alone at night. In groups, during the day, they're relatively safe. The Tenderloin is actually a motel district. Lots of people stay there who come to SF for totally different purposes. There are some interesting bars there but there's nothing really special about the neighborhood except, maybe, it's a little cheaper to stay there. There's a lot more to see in SF, in fact there are more interesting 'bad neighborhoods', like Haight-Ashbury and the Mission Dist.

This is the first time I've heard of the Tenderloin being on a tourist's must-see list. Yes, most parts are generally safe (avoid the 6th and Market area and south on 6th). As with any city, keep your wits about you and don't travel alone. The Loin is definitely dense and definitely diverse, but as far as a place to explore, I wouldn't consider it too interesting. But your mileage may vary.

The Tenderloin is being integrated slowly but surely into "the lower Nob Hill". It is not like it used to be in the good old days and has actually nothing to offer a tourist except excellent Vietnamese/Asian cuisine. I lived at 525 O'Farrell a few years and moved to 555 Eddy. The only problem I ad had was finding a safe place to park my BMW. A short talk with the Vietnamese mphong yam took care of that.

life in the tenderloin is a "true san francisco experience"?Some German tourists would strongly disagree with you. That is, if they could speak. They were murdered there last year in daylite.

That is not a good area at night, or even during the day. Lots of homeless, lots of cheap hotels. I dont know why you would be there. You would find Haight St. more interesting, and all the landmarks of San Francisco.
