I am moving to the San Francisco area with a job waiting. Looking for a safe place to live in the area.?

I don't want to live in the city and I am willing to commute. I know it can be less expensive if live outside the city. My main factor is living in a safe area. Any suggestions? ...show more

Virtually the entire peninsula below San Francisco is safe, although stay out of East Palo Alto. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) serves part of the peninsula and Caltrain serves it all.

Places like fremont, san jose, hayward are safe but stay away from my home, part of the bay cahz it's double trouble there so try a nice place like by the golden gat park you feel me not west side. Im from the bay btw

This depends on where your job is. The bay area is big and traffic is bad so living somewhat close to work with a public transit connection on Bart or Caltrain is wise. So if you're commuting to the city, I'd say most areas along the peninsula are safe (Belmont, Foster City, Redwood City, & Pacifica - Stay away from East Palo Alto). Marin County, just over the GGB is also really safe, although expensive. If you'll be in the east bay I'd say Lafayette, Walnut Creek, Danville, Orinda (Stay away from Richmond, Oakland to Fremont. There are also some very nice safe areas of Berkeley and Piedmont.

You need to come and get temporary housing to get the feel of the place you are considering . It is not less expensive to live on the peninsula but you can take cal train ( check caltrain.com for prices) Burlingame, San Mateo are ok places .South SF and San Bruno are not as good. Bart to east bay is expensive ( bart.gov to check prices) and they are threatening to strike which means higher prices than already present. You need to go far in east bay on that bart map to be safe. Marin is good except for Marin City, and some of San Rafael. Are you working downtown SF?. Check out the new Mission Bay area even though you said you dont want to live in the City. The eastern side of the city has good weather and South Beach and Mission Bay are the trendy places. Go to www.airbnb.com and enter search "Mission Bay' .

What part of S.F. is your job in. There are recommended commutes from all directions depending on job location. I th ink we'd have to know your budget first, and what else matters. Most suburbs are safe. Most parts of San Francisco are safe. It is a small city with very little "bad areas". I live in Marin county so I would recommend that but some areas south of S.F. from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay may be your cup of tea.
