Answer:
First, you earn a bachelor's degree, which will take four years. While doing this, you take the premedical courses. You can major in anything you want, but many aspiring doctors choose to major in a science -- Biology or Chemistry, for example. As you are finishing up your bachelor's, you will take the MCAT -- the medical school admissions test -- and apply to med school. Assuming you get in, you will spend four years in med school earning your MD. Only after you complete the MD will you do a hospital residency specializing in Psychiatry. That will take another 3/4 years, at least. So, after you graduate from high school, you are looking at about 11-12 years of additional education: 4-year bachelor's degree, 4 years earning a medical degree, and some years doing a residency in Psychiatry.

Medical school is something you do after college, it's another 4 years of school and very difficult to gain admission to. In order to do psychiatry you'd need to get into a good 4-year college, major in a science (like biology or chemistry) and get excellent grades (straight A's). Then you apply to medical school and hope you get in. If you do, then you spend another 4 years there learning basic anatomy and doing rotations of every medical specialty. There is no "majoring" in medical school, you simply learn the same things everyone else is learning. At the end of that 8 years then you choose a specialty and go into residency, where you actually work at a hospital and learn your field. For psychiatry this would probably take between 3-5 years, so you're look at 11-13 of schooling beyond high school. It's a very long, difficult and expensive road, but if you work hard enough and excel in your field you might get a great job.
