What are some ways of marketing a price comparison website?
-
So I have been looking at the vast majority of price comparison websites and in particular I have been researching their pricing models, but cannot figure out how someone would market a price comparison website from £0-£1,000,000. The average search terms can cost anywhere from 50p-£5 and retailers are only offering 30-40p per click, so going by those rough calculations that would rule out search engine marketing. SEO would take a long time, unless your producing a lot of content? If you were going to market a price comparison website what would be the best way to go about it?

Answer:
What you described is a form of PPC arbitrage. The established price comparison companies are destination sites. For example, when I want an obscure computer part, I will go to . Let's look at . It is a young company attacking the airline tickets reservation market. There are many websites where you can buy airline tickets, but most of them offer less than stellar buying experience. Moreover, most of them are owned by the same conglomerate. If you can apply Hipmunk's data presentation style to price comparison for another industry, you will likely have better user adoption. If your UX is exceptional, your early users will talk about it to their friends. Thanks for asking, I think I'll go and implement that this weekend. ;)

HI, I have given some thought to that question. Basically you are right - you cannot compete with retailers on SEM, its just to costly. I would go for Email Marketing and Social Media in that order. While youre on it you shouldnt forget SEO, it will be the BASIS for that business model. Thanks Chris

For a B2C product like yours, I'd encourage you to set up a social media presence. What is great about paying for fans or followers is that after your initial investment, you can drive content for free by posting content. If you invest the same amount of money into search engine advertising, as soon as you finish your campaign, you don't have such a luxury.

If you sell products to consumers, then it may be worth your while to look at the price comparison websites on regular basis. These sites are designed for consumers to find the right products at the right price. But they are also ideal tools for businesses that need to see exactly what their competitors are offering, including product types and service levels. seoclerks.com
