What is the difference between a physician and a physician assistant?

  • What do physicians do that a physician can not do. I going to go to college to become a physician assistant, but then was thinking that I may as well just do the physician program if ...show more

  • Answer:

A physician goes to 3 to 4 years of med school AFTER college, then has a year of internship,THEN 3 or 4 years of residency in his/her field. THEN he/she can enter private practice and work 10 or more years to pay back studetnt loans. THEN he/she can start making a LOT more money than a physicians assistant will ever make. Are you in a 2 yr. or 4 yr. program? Would be a good idea to talk to some who are working in that field now. Good Luck Also, NO, they absolutely cannot be called Dr. They do not have a medical degree or doctoral degree of any kind. I am an R. N. and have spent over 30 years working with physicians and physicians assistants.

A physician has had to have a whole lot more education but quite frankly I had a physician assistant for several years that I thought was much more knowledgeable then my doctor. I used to ask for him instead of the regular doctor. He loved his job and consequently I think he worked overtime learning as much or more then the doctor. Probally a big difference in his wage earnings and that would be a bummer because he was brilliant.

Physicians Assistants have slightly less residency and school but they can be called doctor and they can write prescriptions, however they have to have a medical doctor sign off on everything they do. http://www.aapa.org/pgmlist.php3 http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos081.htm
