The Reading Terminal market is a great place to try a variety of food, especially a genuine Philly cheesesteak sandwich. On Wednesdays the Amish come in with fresh produce and baked goods, too. The market is great. It's in the shed of the old train station. Right up the street is the former Wanamaker's department store, which is now a Macy's. At noon they often have free concerts in the great atrium on the mighty Wanamaker's Organ. It is an amazing instrument and you can't beat a free concert. Richard Peter Conte is the organist and is one of the country's most esteemed. Continue up the street to city hall, which you can't miss for its huge spire. You can climb to the top for free, but it's a good idea to make a reservation as they limit how many people can go up there. Then take a walk down Ben Franklin Parkway from City Hall to the museum. It's a nice walk. There are two incredible places you can visit on your way. One is the Franklin Institution, an awesome museum of technology and science. The other is Eastern State Penitentiary, the first true "penitentiary" in the U.S., in which prisoners were expected to do penance and thus were each kept in solitary confinement to reflect on their crimes. It is a self-guided tour and is incredibly interesting. Al Capone was incarcerated there briefly and you can see his cell. He was allowed carpeting, comfy furniture and a gramophone (record player). A little known but really cool museum is the Mutter Museum, which was a medical school teaching museum. It is filled with marvelously disgusting body parts and medical equipment that looks like medieval torture instruments. You can see a huge collection of skulls, Siamese twins in formaldehyde, and a massive turd. Ouch! That guy must've been in some pain. Being in Philly you won't want to miss The Birthplace of Liberty, including Independence Hall, Carpenter's Hall, the Liberty Bell and the old street on which Betsy Ross lived. I forget its name. These are important places in the founding of our country which every American should see and experience. Not far away is the USS "Olympia," the last surviving battleship from the Spanish-American War. It has been nicely restored inside, but hurry: it is slowly sinking and they don't have enough money to save it. There is a submarine you can poke around in tied up alongside. Union Street is also a great place, full of Bohemian nightclubs, restaurants and shops. It is a good night spot. Have a great time in exciting, fun Philadelphia.
