Bachelor of Computer Science or Bachelor in Applied Computer Science.

What is more appropriate for the Data Science Career Path, an Ms.c in Applied Math or an Ms.c in Computer Science?

• I hold a BS.c degree in Computer Science and I work as a full-time Software Engineer / Programmer. I would like to build my career path with a focus on Data Science, Predictive Analytics and Big Data. What will help me more, a masters in Applied Mathematics or a masters in Computer Science?

• Answer:

  This radically depends on what your interests and career goals are. In general, advanced math is not required for 99% of programming jobs -- probably more. For that matter, a Masters degree is not either. Programming is still one of the few technical jobs where you can succeed just by being VERY, VERY GOOD at it as opposed to how much education or any specific degree requirements. Sure, an advanced degree with help with pay and job hunting if you have the SAME skills as you would without that degree, but the SKILLS are what really win. And programming skills are not the whole thing -- knowing a subject (e.g., a minor or just experience in some business or science discipline) is more important much of the time. If you want to make "big bucks" as a consultant then a PhD is probably a requirement, otherwise consider WORKING AS A software engineer or programmer to be as valuable if not more valuable than paying for more paper degrees. Notice:  I am in NO WAY opposed to education or degrees but this is one place where if you have the DRIVE and ABILITY to be a great programmer then becoming a REAL PROGRAMMER and getting LOTS of experience is better than working on academic problems that may have little real interest for you. -- HerbM
