What are good second jobs for electrical engineers?

What is the scope of Electrical engineers in TCS? Why do they recruit electrical engineers for IT jobs?

  • I have also heard that there is a domain called EIS in TCS. Is it core for electrical engineers?

  • Answer:

I have been in TCS from last 1 year. In TCS, everything depends on your luck. You may or may not get the project according to your engineering branch. . There is no concept of assigning the project or technology based upon your engineering  branch or skill set. They will randomly select the technology in which you will be trained in ILP and most funny part is after training selection in the project is also not dependent on the technology in which you will be trained. They have two different streams in training 1. IT (mostly Unix/C++, Jav, Mianframe and .net) 2. EIS In IT you will be mostly dealing with projects which are of support nature. nearly 95% of TCS projects are Support only. I am not so sure about EIS. Basically IDM Work, software installation type of tasks comes in this category. Now coming to the question, why they have selected an Electrical guy... let me tell you selection in TSC is random. They have to show their bench strength to get new projects and the type of projects they are having that can be done by a +2 student also. But its all about showing their bench strength. In Bangalore itself nearly 6000 engineers are on bench.  Coming to the scope of Electrical Engineering, TCS is having projects of GE and some other electronics based companies but they also used to do support only. So don't expect that you will get the project as per your branch.  Better look for an electronics based company.

TCS also hires leather and polymer engineers. They need any person whom they can sell to the clients as a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) professional and who can be trained, gradually, into doing good enough work. My guess, 95% of electrical engineers in TCS will not hear of a synchronous motor again. EIS you are referring to would most probably be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_information_system, a vague and broad term, which can stand for a Database or all company software, but certainly nothing to do with electrical engineering other than the electrical power needed to run it.

It is really very good question that why IT companies recruit Electrical Graduate. I had worked for two years in Cognizant. While I was there in Cognizant I asked the same question to HR person. He replied that they hire Electrical Graduate just because they have gone logical studies so they expect that students will be logical. As per my experience, whether it is core job or IT, everywhere you need to be logical to solve real time problem. So if you find interest in IT you must join. But if your interest is toward Electrical then you should go for it because it is very important to have job satisfaction because at the end it matters. TCS is a good IT company and gives bread and butter. If you get a chance to go to Onsite you will earn knowledge and good package too. But again it depends on your interest. Any engineer is same in any software company. The kind of work that they give amcan be done by a +2 pass student with proper training . they recruit engineers so that they can handle stress and be more social with colleagues . there is nothing to do with any core field .

TCS is pure IT company. It will recruit anyone from any field. One of my friend joined after doing CS. He is also doing some coding work as far as I know. So irrespective of what you have done in past. You are a in TCS for an IT job. They will train you and rest you will learn in your project.

When a IT company recruits you, they don’t care which branch you are from. Most of the IT companies provide their internal training and train people on different technologies. Later the candidates are mapped to a project. So, it doesn’t matter whether you did your graduation from CS or Electrical or any other branch. It also doesn’t matter to the companies whether you are a certified candidate in some technology already. In case of TCS, you will be given a training called ILP. Whether you like it or not, but, you will be assigned a technology randomly and will be trained for a few months. The surprising part comes after your training is done and you report to the base location. Now, irrespective of whatever technology you were trained in (Not to forget, TCS decided the techonogy randomly), you will again be randomly assigned to any project, be it Development, Testing, Support etc.So, stop worrying about the scope. Your scope is limited to the needs of the company and it’s projects.

There is some ambiguity to this question 1) some IT company hire electrical engineer to help in development of software's which are related to electrical field2) some IT company hire electrical engineer considering them to have equal competency to technical graduates, train them and make fit for software field
