Air Traffic Control: How can I learn ATC in order to play on virtual Internet-based flight-simulation networks?

  • I'd love to learn ATC and play on virtual flight simulation networks such as Vatsim and Ivao.

  • Answer:

Honestly?  Beats me.  I only know how I learned ATC at work- a combination of classroom instruction, computer-based instruction, lectures, hours of simulator work, and finally real-world experience with intensive on-the-job training. It took me over 3 years to go from first day at the FAA to being fully certified.  Most of our trainees right now are taking 2 to 4 years, with the average being around 2.75 years. I've heard good things about VATSIM.  Personally I've never messed around but it's my understanding that to be allowed to work a position, a "controller" must actually be rated- which is pretty impressive.

The VATUSA division of VATSIM has a comprehensive training guide to get you started. You don't need to have any ATC knowledge to sign up. Read the training material and then you just sign up for the area where you would like to virtually control. The instructors there will teach you along the way. Start listening to http://www.liveatc.net. Google the phrases you don't know and in short order you should understand the whole process. It's very intuitive once you speak the language — after all, ATC communication has to be concise but incredibly unambiguous.
