What is extensive farming?

What are some resources and advice for medium-size non-machine farming operations and sustainable farming?

  • My wife and I are long-time city dwellers. We are planning to move back to my 47-acre farm in western Pennsylvania. I have about 17 acres of fields. I am wondering if there are any good resources out there for non-machine farming for sustainable agriculture? I would like to know what crops and tools are the most ideal for manual farming. My web searches are not bringing up nearly as much information on the subject as I thought they would. Maybe I am not using the right keywords? Any advice?

Have you looked at the Soil Association's web site and recommended books. Do you know about Permaculture? Try their site for information and ideas. There are tools designed to make manual cultivation easier and there are methods that might help depending on you soil conditions called zero tillage that use mulch. Good luck.

Check out Masonobu Fukouaka. He pioneered non tillage rice growing in Japan, though few seem to be able to reproduce his success his book "one straw revolution" is a fantastic read.
