    Whoa, you are an impressive 13yo. Already planning the future, a good writer and a good saver. Ok as you probably already know, Journalism is one of the toughest industries to crack and its even tougher in NYC because everyone comes here to fulfil their dreams. But someone has to land a job at the Times and it might as well be you right? One thing I have to say is it is never too early to start. Because your so young you have a great amount of time to fill up a portfolio before you even finish school. This is what I would do: 1. In the time between 13-15, start writing. Fiction, non-fiction, investigate something going on in your town or on the bigger market and collect articles on the same story then write your own 'news story' about it from the information you have gathered. Save all of these writings and the clippings to go with it in a folder or portfolio for later. 2. When you are 15 start ringing all kinds of publications locally or in a city that is close by to try and get work experience. Do this every single school vacation that you have. Journalism is built around experience and networking rather then academic merit so be sure to get to know some good contacts within the industry from these publications. 3. By the time you are 18 you will hopefully get into a college across the country to study Journalism. Don't worry about getting into one of the NYC colleges just yet, just find one with a good reputation for producing world class journalists. Try and continue with work experience at publications in your vacations and then over the summer perhaps try and land an internship at a bigger NYC publication or something in D.C whilst you are studying at college. If you move to New YOrk while you are still studying, you will end up broke because of the pay and won't have time to intern. Intern and experience is the most important thing within the studying age of life. 4. By the time you have graduated with all of this experience, good grades, great contacts, and money that you have saved it is now time for you to move to NYC. Find an awesome job and become a great Journolist. One thing I have to say is to make sure you keep up with what is going on in the world, the economy and business is generally boring for a 13 year old but to get an idea is going to help. And anything that you write in a personal or public domain make sure you put it in your portfolio. Honestly in the journo industry experience and contacts are everything so if you have these you are already ahead. Good Luck, and make sure you KNOW that you have the goods to be the best.

Columbia & both have great programs, but take fit from some one in the business stay away from newspapers they are dying a slow death. Stay with T.V. news or new media

Save alot of money is the first thing i am going to tell you. Ask your parents to do some financial planning on your beahlf til you go. ok...schools. Well you have Columbia of course, NYU, Manhattanville, John Jay and a couple others who names escape me. Now all of these do not have Journalism majors but if you want/need to get an associates before going to Columbia's journalism school then why not jump right in the pool by going to another school nearby? Now jobs...in the busiest city in the world...8 million people. You may need 2 jobs. And if you have not done it before. You may have to swallow your pride and work at Mcdonald's or something along with your work-study. But you should try to get jobs that will help you with your career choice. and give you some time to get your school-work done. After you are done with your schooling go look for what you just spent the last <insert number here> years studying. If you studied journalism. Don't go to some restaurant and ask for a job. Hit up newpapers, magazines hell call up the National enquirer if you have to. But always stay focused on what you want to do. Stupid or crazy? This is flippin' brilliant. People would be alot happier now-a-days if they did what they loved and not what paid the bills. If you want to be a journalist then by all means f*ck everyone who is not down with you being a journalist. If that is your life dream and what you feel <insert your diety> put you on this earth for then go do it. Go do it be happy and be you. Last but not least. If you do what you love everyday then you never truly "work."

Columbia University has one the best (graduate) schools in the country and is based in Manhattan. But you'll have to do an undergrad degree for 4 years first. A good bet for this is the Univ. of Missouri. So you do 4 years at Missouri and then go to Univ of Columbia for grad school. The Columbia grad program will be in NYC and you should get all your work opportunities through that...... internships then jobs etc. So google..... University of Missouri Journalism Undergrad Then.... University of Columbia Journalism Grad (Btw if you are genuinely 13 then I'm quite impressed you are planning this far ahead)

You are not stupid or crazy. You have a dream and you should pursue it. Determination is half the battle--it's a cliche, but it is absolutely true. Stick to your dream.

You still have like 5 years left to figure this out so I wouldn't worry about it.
