What is this statue/monument in New York?

I see a lot of mailings from NYC saying New York, New York. What is the name officially?

  • Everytime I see an address from NYC, I see New York, New York. Is New York City just slang or is New York slang? Which is the proper way to call NYC, New York or New York City?

  • Answer:

Officially, It's New York, New York. People use "City" to distinguish the city from the State.

The Official Address format is New York, New York 100__ However some people abbreviate Then some name borough names.

Well officially the city is named "New York" But you must remember, that "New York" is also the name of the state. Therefore for mailing purposes..it's usually written "city, state"..therefore..if written correctly..the mailing must be "New York, New York". However...because they both have the same name..to help distinguish the two since it's VERY easy for people to get confused when just saying "New York" in conversation..ppl often add the work "City" or "State" to the conversation to make things easier...such as..my brother goes to school at Hofstra in New York State...but my big brother lives in New York City... Hope this helps. ~G

New York, New York refers to Manhattan. The second NY refers to the State of New York. The first New York is Manhattan (called New York County). The other New York City addresses put the borough first, ie, Bronx, New York; Brooklyn, New York (which is called Kings County, not Brooklyn County); Staten Island, New York (Richmond County). And, to confuse us further, the addresses in Queens often use the neighborhood, and don't say Queens in the address at all - Forest Hills, NY; Flushing, NY; Jamaica, NY. So, New York, NY is Manhattan.

New York City is in New York State. You have the same situation in England, where the very picturesque City of York is located in the County of York. Of course, in England they distinguish the county by calling it Yorkshire, while here we distinguish the city by saying New York City. In Russia it is very common for oblasts to have the name of their largest town.

No one in New York City calls it New York City. People there seperate it into five sections, called burroughs. The 5 burroughs of NYC are: Manhatten, Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn, and Bronx. The section that everyone thinks of as New York City is the Manhatten burrough. But if you are addressing an envelope, you do not have to put "City". You can simply put "New York, NY".

It is New York, New York. If you're mailing something it is NEW YORK, NY. The first New York names the city and the second New York, or NY, names the state. People say "New York city" for clarity to distinguish it from "New York state".
