Where is a good place to live in between wilshire blvd LA and El Segundo?

  • My friend and I both just recently got jobs in LA area, he will be working on Wilshire blvd and I will be working in El Segundo. What is a good place to live that would be a ...show more

  • Answer:

West LA, Marina del Rey, and Santa Monica are a very expensive places to live. Culver City may be less expensive. You may aslo check along the coast (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach) I know someone who lives in Manhattan Beach; it is very nice. Stay out of Hawthorne. Read the scam section on Craigs List. Generally, if you find a cheap place to live, it is a scam.

Thought I already answered this one... Start looking in Culver City, Palms, and Mar Vista. Then expand your search from there. "Reasonable commute" in LA is less than an hour. I laugh when I see people on House Hunters complain about a 10 minute commute.

Much of Westchester is very safe.

What is your budget? Generally you need to figure that you need to be earning about 3 times the rent. So if you find a 1 Bedroom Apartment for say $1000(Average 1 BR is $1200). You need to be earning about $3000/month. This also depends on various other factors such as your credit. One other thing you need to think about. Unless you are married many landlords will require both people to be able to pay the rent on their own. This is because they have often been "burnt" one too many times of relationships or friendships that went bad. Where one party leaves and the other party can't pay the rent leaving the landlord in a very bad situation. As for where. The "West Side" is generally going to be more expensive than the average rent which is around $1200/month for a 1 Bedroom. In the area between the two points you have just about all ranges from million dollar houses to public housing projects. From areas with fairly low crime, to areas with a very high crime rate. But in general the places closer to the Wilshire location will be better. As you get closer to El Segundo you can get into some really sketchy areas. If you are going for a true 1/2 way point. Places such as Culver City, or even Venice might be good options. But just like every other place they too have their bad areas.

Culver City/Mar Vista is about the mid-point, if you can afford Westside rents.

Wilshire Blvd is a very long street. Will he be working in downtown LA or in Santa Monica? Anything along the I-10 is "doable". It just depends how much you can afford.
