Answer:
I don’t know about the rest of Hawaii but I was in Oahu and it was great! The beach is beautiful, got a chance to check out the University of Hawaii campus, also Pear Harbor was heart breaking, the Dole plantation was nice & the Waimea Valley Audubon Center was nice as well. I also highly recommend a helicopter tour if you go it was absolutely breathtaking. It is also home to the only royal palace in the United States. I HATE to fly and I am very happy I braved the long flight to go and can’t wait to see the rest of the islands, I hope this helped.

You know, you really just have to see it for yourself. What 90% of the population may think of as great, you may feel stinks. You have to subject yourself to the experience and then come away with your own idea of what is great and what is not. Yes, if you are a young white male and travelling the rural back road areas at night, you may be subjected to some bad stuff. Stay in the well traveled areas. Never leave any items of value in your locked car. Your car will be jimmied open and the items stolen. I often leave my car unlocked so that they won't break the locks. If you like ethnic cultural activities, this is the place for you. You will see not only the Hawaiian, but Japanese, Chinese, Philipino, Portuguese and Polynesian influences all over. If you smile and show respect to the people and the land, they will show respect to you as well. If you need proof, and aren't willing to experience it for yourself, I would say stay away until you are old enough to make these decisions yourself.

I heard that the natives are really prejudiced against white people.

As commercial travel evolved, Hawaii has become more and more a "Tourist Trap", very populated and thus expensive. Still, the smaller islands of Maui and Kauai, are the most popular in that they offer some of the lushest, tropical scenery. With that, weather is at high humidity, and many a moonson has been known to leave some heavy raindrops (or flooded!) All the resorts offer culture shows and Luaus whether you stay there or not. There are beaches for everybody-surfing, snorkeling, tidepooling. Today I would suggest the best way to see the islands is with a boat cruise tour (I prefer smaller private charters); you have your room throughout, the best of food, company and guides that lead land excursions each day. As a lifelong resident of Hawaii, I think living here is great and being on vacation here is even better! Since I live here and must work to pay my mortgage, I do not have time to relax on the beach and spend lazy days poolside but you tourists do! So live it up and enjoy the sun, surf, and the great culture that surrounds Hawaii. Where else can you find warm weather, clean water, and great people all in the same place!?!

I live on O'ahu temporarily b/c of the Military & we had to stay here for a bit. Being from California, I'd have to say that I didn't get use to Hawaii fast. I caught the island fever very easily. Hawaii is very slow paced. It will take you some time to understand Hawaiian Culture, for it being a small island, you will notice the rudeness & racism that come from a large number of individuals. Yes, the locals here are racist against white people & most of them do not like tourist or people from Mainland. The beaches are indeed beautiful but can get pretty crowded due to the high level of tourism. While the local, hawaiian born people say Hawaii is great, there are also some people who indeed hate living in Hawaii. Vacationing in Hawaii is very different from living in Hawaii. The first time I vacationied here, I actually liked it, then after I moved here, I noticed that it wasn't what I thought it would be. You can't judge Hawaii from a vacation. Besides, Hawaii is not the only place in the world where they have beaches, warm weather, beautiful women, etc. If you like islands & the beach & want the full experience, there are other islands around the world that are way better than Hawaii. Such as the Caribbean, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexican Riviera, Cancun, etc. Were leaving Hawaii next month & can't wait to go back to Mainland where we belong :) We just recently visited another island (Kauai) that island is alot better than O'ahu. We enjoyed it! We will make a pact to visit Maui in the future, but never again in O'ahu.
