The first cell phone was made by Bell labs in 1947, but Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola is given the most credit for the invention of the cell phone in 1974. The first cell phones were only sold to the government and in 1984 they finally were offered to the public. They were large, heavy, and copied land line phones in style and were carried in a zippered bag with the battery taking up the whole bottom.
